Saturday, March 13, 2010 at 4:53PM Downey Set to Star in Alfonso Cuaron's 'Gravity'
Robert Downey, Jr. is in talks to star in the next Alfonso Cuaron film, Gravity, which is a movie you may have heard of before, if only because of its casting. The movie sounds like Moon where it matters: It's about the two survivors at a remote space outpost, trying to return to Earth after the rest of the crew is killed by falling debris from a destroyed satellite.

Gravity first made waves as the possible reason Angelina Jolie was passing on Wanted 2. Turns out, though, that she passed on this one as well. It was at Universal, which through all of this has now lost the Wanted sequel and Gravity - good week - but now it's over at Warner Bros.
Downey would shoot the film this summer in London, says Deadline, and that sets him up nicely to make the Sherlock Holmes sequel there for the same studio.
It still remains to be seen who will play the role that Jolie has now turned down. The chance to work with Downey and Cuaron ought to bring quite a few actresses out of the woodwork. That should give the director and the producers some flexibility in finding exactly the right name to pair with Downey. For some reason, the first name that pops into my mind is Naomi Watts. I don't know enough about the script to say whether not that's an ideal situation for Watts or the film, but she's at least on par with Jolie in terms of ability, the producers clearly see the role as being slightly older (not a woman in her 20s, anyway), and it would be nice to see her in a big movie again.
But that's just me. Fingers crossed Warners doesn't want Sandra Bullock, hot off her Oscar win for the studio (and, more importantly, her $250 million football movie).

Jolie hasn't officially turned it down. This might be part of a multi-picture deal for her at Warner Bros.
