Wednesday, March 17, 2010 at 10:28PM Akiva Goldsman Directing 'Paranormal Activity 2'?
A few weeks ago, some surprising developments for Paranormal Activity 2 bubbled to the surface. Who would've thought Paramount would be looking at Brian De Palma to direct or even powerhouse producer Akiva Goldsman?
Shock Till You Drop says that Goldsman has at least come aboard as the executive producer and will help the story take shape before it shoots in two months and that he may just emerge as the director, as well. It would be his first film behind the camera should it pan out that way.
From his perspective, it makes twice as much sense: Suppose the sequel does moderately well by commercial standards. It won't do $192 million worldwide like the first one (thereby becoming the first movie to have a one million percent return on investment), but even if it does half that much, Goldsman the producer has connected himself to a possible franchise that costs next to nothing.
Meanwhile, Goldsman the director will be able to set himself up for bigger projects down the road, should he choose to continue wearing that hat. He's perhaps best known as a writer, which is how he got his start, so this transition would complete his trifecta.
There are some conflicting reports about the level of his involvement, but the producer/writer bit is confirmed. I'd still vote De Palma, even though I hate just about everything he's made in 20 years, because I think this is the kind of movie he's always done best and he could get more out of the limited resources. Hypothetically, at least.
