Thursday, March 18, 2010 at 7:38AM Michael Mann Still Making 'For Whom the Bell Tolls'
I'm a bigger fan of Michael Mann than most people, although I'm evenhanded enough to admit his last
two films aren't all that good. But I still look forward to his work and even though Miami Vice and Public
Enemies missed the mark on the whole, I still think some of Mann's best work could be ahead of him. Collateral
wasn't that long ago, after all.
Geek Tyrant reports that Mann is still working on a film version of Ernest Hemingway's For Whom the Bell Tolls. The
last (and only) time the classic novel has made it to the silver screen before was in 1943. That time it starred Gary
Cooper and Ingrid Bergman and was nominated for nine Oscars, winning Best Supporting Actress for, you guessed it, Katina
Paxinou.
So, yes, this one's probably overdue for another run. It has apparently been on a slow boil at Warner Bros. for four
years, and Mann has another Spanish Civil War movie he's working on, too, based on the book Waiting for Robert
Capa. However, I agree with Geek Tyrant that the filmmaker will have trouble getting either movie made. War movies
aren't big business. Ask Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass, whose Green Zone may make 40% of its budget back here in
the US.
That, of course, isn't a period piece that, from the perspective of young audiences, came from a book they tried to dodge in high school. Or do they still teach reading in high school? The point is, who can you sell this to?
With Mann's recent track record of big-budget movies that don't do well enough, it seems nearly impossible, even though he's still reportedly attached to direct. He'd have to both drastically cut his normal costs and cast - I dunno - Brangelina (and for very little money by their usual standards) to get Warner Bros. to go all-out for this. Who knows, though. Maybe it's developing into a great script and the studio will fall in love with it. Doesn't seem likely, however.
In a perfect world, Mann could make the movies he wants to make because he's proven he can do it. But nobody lives there. OK, maybe Jim Cameron and Christopher Nolan.

"Last of the Mohicans" was the kind of book you'd read in high school too and look what he did with that. The thing he has to do is make a bigger impression than the crime movies he's done and/ or just really sell the idea that this is something really different. I'm a big fan too, of even the stuff he's produced like "The Kingdom" and "Badassss".
Michael Mann is one of those guys who gets taken for granted.
It's only in retrospect, when he's not around to make more movies, that people will recognise how good he is/was.
Although, Public Enemies is a damned good movie suffering from poor camera work. Hand-held camera does not work with crystal clear digital HD.
Public Enemies was profitable? It made over $200 million bucks! How is that bad?
