At some point in the future, our organs will be replaced by synthetics. They'll work better, last longer, be a snap to replace with upgrades, and they'll even come complete with payment plans, to the tune of a steep 20% interest rate. Those are the conditions in Repo Men, based on the sci-fi novel The Repossession Mambo, and because these artificial organs - called Forgs in this world - carry such a big sticker price, they have to be valuable to the company that produces them. And that company will go to great lengths to get them back. If you're three months overdue on payments for you new liver, kidneys, hearts, eyes, lungs, whatever, The Union will send out "highly trained specialists" to reclaim those spare parts. It's bloody, unseemly work and requires a certain kind of individual. Two such individuals are Remy (Jude Law) and Jake (Forest Whitaker). Remy tells us they met in the fourth grade - Jake's third try at the fourth grade - and have been inseparable ever since. They fought in the war, and after it was over, Remy notes that the fighting didn't stop; they just changed the venue. So now, Remy and Jake find organ recipients who have missed payments, tase them, cut them open, take the organs, and leave. A man with a prized liver tries to bargain with Remy, offering him cash on the barrel head. "Not my department," deadpans the repo man. Remy has no choice but to change his tune when a malfunctioning defibrillator used on the job leaves his own ticker in need of immediate replacement. Yep, the repo man has to keep up with his payments or The Union will take the heart back. And Remy knows exactly how that would play out. Repo Men is a bit too flowery for its own good, and while the song selection on the soundtrack and a few oddball characters stand out, most of those influences come at the expense of the story. There's a weird bit of recurring narration about Schrödinger's Cat, although at a very fundamental level, there's a connection between that theory and living with artificial blood pumpers in your chest. If the film had discarded some of those influences, this could have been a solid future noir sci-fi flick. There's probably nothing about it that would signal a classic in the making, but for most of its two hours, it's interesting to watch and moves along pretty well. There's a 20-minute segment of the film that really falls flat, but even that doesn't totally derail the film. Jude Law is quite good, which used to always be the case. It's a very good, very smart performance that also showcases a bit of the action hero Law probably had to become to extend his range. He doesn't disappoint here at all. The same can be said for Whitaker, the weasely Liev Schreiber, and Alice Braga as a mysterious, alluring multiple organ recipient/junkie/jazz singer. What ultimately blocks Repo Men from being more of a success is an astonishing amount of gore. We're attuned to violence in the media, but many of us still squirm with depictions of surgery. It so up close, so slow, so invasive, and it's just hard to watch. In addition to several organ extractions throughout the film, the climactic scene follows up a violent group knife fight with, if such a thing is possible, an orgy of surgical procedures. The future first-time director Miguel Sapochnik creates is really believable, he's given us good characters, and a premise that probably isn't too far off the path. It's even timely for both sides of the health care debate. But it bounds too far in too many directions, lacking the consistency and efficiency it needs. But it's more of a fun distraction than a frustrating one.
