Saturday, March 20, 2010 at 3:51PM 'Monster Squad' Remake On the Way
I'm OK with the Fright Night remake in theory, and I'm OK with the new Nightmare on Elm Street (even if they should have just started with a prequel), so I'll stay in that camp for Monster Squad. The original came out in 1987 and became kind of a cult classic. It's a small cult, though.

The orginal idea, co-written by Shane Black, revolved around some kids who love old monster movies and stumble onto a diary written in Germany, which in a roundabout way unlocks a treasure trove of those same monsters come to life - Dracula, The Wolf Man, The Mummy, and Frankenstein's monster, plus Gill Man (or something like that).
The remake will be a Platinum Dunes joint, and that kind of tempers expectations a little, but not quite as much as the news that Rob Cohen will direct it. What's the problem, Stephen Sommers was suddenly unavailable? Actually, as Deadline points out, Cohen produced the first Monster Squad, so maybe he's worked a deal with Platinum Dunes to handle both duties.
It's certainly got some potential, but I think the monster movie backlash could hit by the time the remake rolls out. Actually, I think we're at the beginning of the monster movie backlash already. It shouldn't effect Twilight, but look at The Vampire's Assistant and The Wolfman: Total budgets - $190 million. Total ticket sales - $164 million worldwide. Time will tell if they're isolated cases, but there was plenty of push for each followed by plenty of push back.
So will audiences be in the mood for more old monsters in a year or two, especially all at once? I guess you can argue that Dracula can play at any time, and that might be true. But for a guy who can't be in the sun, he's sure getting plenty of daylight these days.
