Tuesday, March 23, 2010 at 6:50PM Will Ferrell Says 'Anchorman' Sequel Is On Hold
We certainly don't need an Anchorman sequel, but I always thought Will Ferrell and company could do more with Ron Burgundy and at least some of the other characters. We could see a prequel of Burgundy cutting his teeth in the 1960s or a later version of the newscasting legend in the 1980s, which would have the rise of 24-hour cable news as an obvious backdrop.

It looked as though a second film wouldn't take long to arrive after Steve Carell and Paul Rudd said last year they'd absolutely do it again. Now, however, Ferrell is singing a different tune. "I thought we were doing it. I was told it was happening and now I've heard it's going to be too hard to get everyone together," Ferrell told Zoo magazine.
"Hopefully [director] Adam McKay will be able to talk to all the guys individually and see if we can figure it out."
I don't think it would stall for that reason. I think it would have more to do with Ferrell only having two hits and five years and being at or near the top of the list of the worst ROI personalities in Hollywood, meaning he brings back the least amount of revenue for each dollar he earns of any major star. Even though this would almost certainly draw better than Semi-Pro, I don't think DreamWorks would want to dump a lot of money into it upfront.
Here's something that won't help secure financing: "We don't think we can make it as good," Ferrell admits. "It would be really fun to do, so we might just try to make the craziest sequel you've ever seen. It could be terrible, but if they're going to pay us to do it, then why not, right?"
That's the spirit.
