Tuesday, March 30, 2010 at 5:52PM More 'Independence Days' Sequel(s) Rumors
Unconfirmed but not unexpected, a news item about not one but two Independence Day sequels was reported earlier at IESB. Roland Emmerich broached the subject several months ago, and with the big success of 2012 (the number 31 movie of all-time in global box office), if Emmerich wants to revisit the franchise, what studio wouldn't want to do that?
The studio in Fox, which probably made a comfortable amount of money from something called Avatar (who involved didn't?), and while there was a point in time that 20th didn't want to pay Will Smith $20 million plus a percentage of first-dollar grosses, if the IESB report is accurate, there's been a change in the weather there.
The current rumor has Smith starring in both sequels, which would shoot back-to-back, so without getting into the math, it's safe to say Will can finally afford to buy his kids nice things, like maybe their own movie franchises. Oh wait...he's already doing that.
IESB acknowledges that there is no studio back-up for its story, citing a tipster who says the first movie could shoot as early as next year. Emmerich has a movie called Anonymous slow roasting at the moment, and Smith, as we chronicled the other day, hasn't made a decision about what he's going to do next.
For the life of me, I'll never understand why Fox didn't see huge franchise potential for this property ten years ago. But I think it's a testament to the movie that it still absolutely has a big upside for sequels.

Still one of my all time favorite movies of all time. Definately want sequels to this, and well they are at it why don't they release the directors cut on Blu Ray. I've been very patiently waiting but i am not buying it on blu ray til they release a directors cut. Once you've seen the extended version there is no going back to theatrical cut. Guess i'll stick to the regular DVD on upconvert
