Saturday, March 6, 2010 at 10:50AM 'Captain America' Casting Search Narrows Even More
I really don't know how a project as promising as The First Avenger: Captain America could get so off-track. With all the resources Marvel could put behind it, it's shaping up to possibly be the worst of the company's major films. As part of the all-important Avengers arc, how could Marvel think Joe Johnston is really the best choice to direct, that spending the second half of the movie dealing with other heroes is the way to go, or that - given those things - it should not go out and find the best Captain America possible?

I was critical of Thor around this stage, too, but that was primarily because it's tougher to turn into a movie. This one should be a slam dunk. And, to his credit, director Kenneth Branagh has put together a hell of a cast for Thor, even if the lead actor was a bit of a surprise. So there's hope for Cap, but in the face of a lot of contrary evidence.
We are apparently down to three actors to play the role of super soldier Steve Rogers: John Krasinski from The Office, Gossip Girl's Chace Crawford, and Mike Vogel from Cloverfield. There were six names on the short list that were going to get screen tests. I'm not sure what happened to Patrick Flueger (The 4400), but his name is no longer being mentioned.
Two others confirmed that they were in the running, but aren't now, so says Worst Previews. Michael Cassidy from Smallville Tweeted, "No Captain America for me," and Friday Night Lights star Scott Porter posted on his Facebook page, "Ain't Cap. Thank you all for the prayers though, I appreciate them all so very much."
Garrett Hedlund and Jensen Ackles were also on the radar but weren't able to shoot the recent screen tests. So maybe, maybe producers will look at the trio they have to work with and give it a little more time. I like Hedlund most of all if they expand the group. Of those three presumably still in the running, I'd go with Mike Vogel but...really?

Rumor has it Justin Bethancourt, the silent front runner for Conan, is being looked at for a possible Capt. As of this post there is no confirmation he as read as of yet.
For the love of all things merciful, please pick Garrett Hedlund! I love him, and out of the people in the list, he is the best. If he is picked I will believe in a divine being (or believe in this being even more). They should just get rid of Chace Crawford and I wouldn't be so alarmed. But...really? This is the best they could come up with? I hope whoever is picked can blow our minds away and prove us wrong.
I'm totally with you on Thor Colin. I went from saying "Thor's going to be the most stupid Marvel movie ever" to "Wow, Thor actually sounds pretty damn awesome."
I want for Captain America to be the same, but I really, really, really don't like where it's going at this point. Joe Johnston is hot off the "success" of his "revolutionary" revival of The Wolfman , plus I don't see any of the leading contenders for the role to be anywhere near a good fit. Vogel, maybe, if he bulks up a ton. But hell no to Chase or John.
I'm pretty sure, i will not watch the movie if they cast Chace Crawford.I think Jensen Ackles could be a great Captain if hadn't drop off the contetion because of the 6th season of Supernatural. And of those four still in the running, i hope mike vogel or patrick flueger get the role.
P.S: I wish Marvel was casting more populer actors for title roles of both Thor and Captain America.
Marvel isn't going to cast more popular actors. One it is too expensive, and two it really hurts the movie. I heard someone say it perfectly once. I would rather see a unknown actor become Captain America, then watch a big star try to convince us he's Captian America. I mean how different was the X-men movie with Haley Berry trying to convince you she was Storm (and she did awful at it), but Hugh Jackmen was practically unknown and now people can't see him and not think (The Wolverine). And I think that the guy from Star Trek that is playing Thor is going to be great. I wish people would cut Marvel some slack. They have only completely done two movies on their own Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk, and both movies were greatly cast. I am going to leave it to Marvel to make the right choice for the stories they are telling. They have done great on the two movies they have done without Fox. So why is everyone questioning their decisions; there is no precedent for all the questioning. I was really hoping for Scott Porter, but they didn't pick him and I am sure they have a vision and a reason. I'm just saying, until they F- up one of these movies, I'm going to let them handle the casting. So quit whining and enjoy the Movies!!!
My cousin works at Stan Lee's company POW Entertainment and said that he heard that they are still seeing people and that the list doesn't include everyone. Justin Hartley, Matt Beidel, and James Badge Dale are some names that he heard in the last few days. One of the previous posters was right in that they've done a pretty good job casting so far, so hopefully the trend continues. It seems like they're being thorough which is good. I just want the movie to be good and I'm holding out hope that it will be.
