'Spider-Man' Casting Might Be Closer Than We Think

It didn't take long for Spider-Man casting to provide grist for the rumor mill, but so far, there's been no official announcement of any kind that certain actors have even been contacted. There shouldn't be a rush, because there's no point doing the movie until everything's in place, even if it does have a 2012 release date. New Spidey director Marc Webb (500 Days of Summer) says "We're casting a wide net. That's really all I can say at this moment." He adds that more information will be coming soon, maybe even just weeks from now. Oh, and he's had "cool conversations" with Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who might be a little old given that this is a reboot, but otherwise, it's right on. We know that Webb has already spoken to James Cameron about incorporating 3-D into the new vision of Peter Parker, and who better? But casting this role correctly is ultimately more important to this project. If Webb doesn't seem like a director who might be up to the challenge of a production of this size and scope, he at least seems like a good caretakers. "I think that there's something about Peter Parker that's just — he's a legend, and that mythology is appealing to me, and it has been for a long time," the director explained. "It's really just a dream come true."

I bet these cool conversations with JGL are about him accepting the role of villain... you're right when you say he's too old for the reboot spidey, but probably good for whatever antagonist they go with. I will say though, of all his performances, most of which are great, his weakness lies in playing the bad guy (Killshot, GI Joe, etc.)... I guess Inception will be a good test of his reliable villainy?
