Waltz Out, Viggo In For Cronenberg's 'Talking Cure'

Christoph Waltz was supposed to play Sigmund Freud in the new David Cronenberg film, The Talking Cure, which will co-star Michael Fassbender as Carl Jung. But the new Oscar winner has dropped out of the production to focus on another bad guy role in Water for Elephants. In his place, according to Deadline, is Viggo Mortensen, who has fairly famously walked away from acting. He hasn't been in front of a camera in two years and had said as recently as November or so that he didn't really have much of an interest in working again. However, this is Cronenberg, and Viggo has had probably his two best roles working under his tutelage in Eastern Promises and A History of Violence, so he is apparently happy to oblige the odd Canadian filmmaker since he's in a pinch. While it's a shame that Waltz won't be on board, I certainly don't view Viggo as a drop off, especially with his Cronenberg connection. The other noteworthy castmember is Keira Knightley, who will reportedly be partaking in "lots of spirited sex" in her subplot, a torrid affair with Fassbender's Carl Jung, the father of analytical psychology and apparently a freak in the sheets. The production will get underway in a couple of months, and while there's no word on release dates or anything, Cronenberg usually gets quite the reaction at the Toronto Film Festival. That would only leave about four months to shoot the film and put it together, so maybe not this year.
