Thursday, April 1, 2010 at 2:20PM Fearless Forecast - 'Titans' to Rule the Weekend
It's an atypical weekend at the box office in a lot of ways. To begin with, the Good Friday holiday will have a larger impact than most Fridays, there are two new movies expected to clear $20 million, and old movie that might flirt with $30 million, and another new release that could hit $60 million or more because it has some openings tonight.
That movie, of course, is Clash of the Titans, which isn't winning over any fans in the critical community. Actually, I think bad reviews could hurt this one, particularly because it's a remake. Older audiences generally don't like new versions of films they grew up with - and by "older audiences," I mean anyone over about the arbitrary Hollywood cut-off of 34 - and if the remake is getting bad reviews on top of that, it probably won't help matters.
Still, they're just gravy, anyway. All Warner Bros. really cares about is 3-D ticket sales in that expanded 13 - 25 demo, and there should be plenty of those. Curiously, this is about the number I predicted for Alice in Wonderland, which, as we know, ratcheted it up a notch or two on opening weekend. I really don't think Titans can break $100 million, but I'll keep my mouth shut here in the age of 3-D. However, How to Train Your Dragon didn't do very well with the extra revenue, even though over two-thirds of its opening weekend sales were 3-D. See: It's not the technology, it's the movie. Always will be, studios.
The two other new films that ought to have good weekends are Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married Too? and The Last Song with Miley Cyrus. Built-in audiences should give these movies about what you'd expect, but neither should break out to a wider audience in any meaningful way. The carryovers, How to Train Your Dragon and Alice in Wonderland will round out the top five, barring some unforeseen event.
The Top Five:
1 - Clash of the Titans ($64 million)
2 - How to Train Your Dragon ($28 million)
3 - So...Why Did I Get Married, Too, As Well ($24.5 million)
4 - The Last Song ($19 million)
5 - Alice in Wonderland ($12 million)

I really hope that Titans fails. A high profile bomb might be the only thing that can kill post production 3D upconversion.
Well, this looks like one I'll just wait for the Blu-Ray for...
The trailers looked like it was going to be a great stylistic companion to the God of War video games, but it sounds like you'll get a beater contemporary myth experience by just playing God of War 3...
