Thursday, April 1, 2010 at 8:11AM Paul Greengrass to Direct 'Fantastic Voyage' Remake?
No Bourne, no problem. Paul Greengrass might direct the 3-D remake of Fantastic Voyage for Fox and James Cameron. That's not a bad fall-back option. Greengrass is known for his action direction, of course, but this would have to be slightly different if Michael Bay's correct that the bulky 3-D cameras don't lend themselves to quick movement, at least not yet.

Variety says it's still really early in the negotiations, but it's an odd pairing. I don't mean that Cameron and Greengrass shouldn't team up on something, but given the nature of this project, Greengrass doesn't seem like he'd be a natural choice. He's made his mark with handheld cinematography and that's simply not an option here. The original is also lighter in tone than Greengrass' more famous films.
There's another side of this, though. After the fallout over the fourth Jason Bourne movie and reports that he went over his budget for Green Zone, which is a huge failure, Greengrass might need to prove that he can work well with others again. And if it works out at the contractual level and he and Cameron are on the same page, that could be one hell of a movie.
The original film was a big deal back in the mid-60s, launching an ABC Saturday morning spin-off, and winning two Oscars while being nominated for three more. A remake has actually been in development for about 25 years, but it's never caught on. Roland Emmerich was attached to direct this version, but even that goes back almost three years. Then the writers strike hit, and Emmerich went off to work on 2012 instead.
Actually, Roland would probably be a safer pick than Greengrass, but this new development certainly has a bit of bravado.
