Monday, April 12, 2010 at 2:15PM Chris Pine's Jack Ryan Movie To Be Called 'Moscow'
Chris Pine, as you may remember, is not just Captain Kirk, but Jack Ryan, as well. Oh yes, Paramount is squarely in the Chris Pine business these days. But what will that Jack Ryan movie resemble? We already knew it wasn't based on anything Tom Clancy ever wrote, but is more of an origin story, although not exactly.
Pajiba's well-placed insider reveals that the new movie will "pick him up while he's on Wall Street." Fans of the novels probably could have guessed that, because references to Ryan's work in the private sector aren't impossible to find. But you probably wouldn't know that Ryan will do his financial analyst work in Russia, because that's not in the Clancy books anywhere.
Yeah, apparently, Paramount and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura like the title Moscow, which I don't think will do the trick. Hard to forget, but also pretty hard to define on these terms. Ryan will work for a billionaire who sets him up to be the fall guy for a terrorist plot targeting the US economy.
"After that, reports Pajiba, "Ryan must race against time to clear his name, reveal the terrorist plot, and save his wife, who has been taken hostage by the billionaire employer." And...scene. Ryan would then join the CIA, having all this experience under his belt.
This also hews closely to the story of a screenplay called Dubai, which di Bonaventura had also taken an interest in. Looks like it's been stripped for parts. I like Pine for the role, and I like the story, even if it's lifted from something else entirely. And, damn it, Russia is a cool setting for a movie. It does half the work for you.

This sounds awesome! I'm a fan of the Clancy novels, and even though this doesn't come directly from him I think the story is great for the character. Chris Pine has a very Harrison Ford-esque quality about him so I'm really looking forward to this.
