Monday, April 12, 2010 at 5:25PM 'Masters of the Universe' Reboot Moves to Columbia
He-Man is coming back, even though Warner Bros. couldn't seize the same opportunity to make it a couple years ago. Now Mattel is partnering with Columbia for Masters of the Universe (formerly Grayskull), officially putting this one back on the fast track.
Heat Vision Blog reports that the studio has hired Michael Finch and Alex Litvak from the new Predators reboot to fashion the script. The toys came first, followed by the TV show, followed by an embarrassing movie starring Dolph Lundgren and Frank Langella as Skeletor. Seriously, the phrase "Frank Langella as Skeletor" ought not be in the English language.
I suppose it says something about Mattel that it had creative differences with Warners about the direction of the project. Hasbro seems more content to just make a blockbuster at any cost (literally and figuratively). Of course, there's no guarantee the toy maker will get what it wants from Sony/Columbia, either, so there's still a chance this won't happen.
Whether it was the quality of the scripts themselves or some intellectual property stuff - which I doubt, but it's not impossible - the new Masters of the Universe is starting from scratch. Of course, how much can really change? It's He-Man, Skeletor, Grayskull, Man-at-Arms, and the Teen Angels. Oh wait...that's Captain Caveman. Sorry.
With the not-exactly-successful G.I. Joe movie last summer, there's now evidence that some of these things, no matter how big they were 25 years ago, may not cut it now. Transformers is an anomoly, and it's backed by some of the biggest names in the business. So, there are miles to go for He-Man, and it may not be a journey worth taking.
