Scorsese's 3-D 'Hugo Cabret' Opens December 2011

Martin Scorsese's next film, The Invention of Hugo Cabret, is a bold departure for a lot of reasons. It's a kids' movie, on the whole, it's going to be shot in 3-D, and it's a holiday movie. Box Office Mojo writes that Sony has cemented December 9, 2011 for the release date of Hugo Cabret, which Scorsese is scheduled to shoot in the next couple of months. It's the third 3-D family movie to claim a weekend that month, although it will be the first chronologically, coming before Alvin and the Chipmunks 3-D (December 16th) and The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn (December 23rd). Scorsese has attached his Shutter Island cast member, Ben Kingsley, along with Chloe Moretz from Kick-Ass and Sacha Baron Cohen. Asa Butterfield from The Boy in the Striped Pajamas will portray Cabret. The 3-D element is an intriguing prospect, but I'm not worried about Scorsese telling a more family-friendly story. Yes, he's known for something else entirely, but he directs scripts about as well as possible; I don't think he'll have trouble adapting. He's also worked with writer John Logan before. But the 3-D...that is a new wrinkle. Again, I'm not worried about it, but I do wonder how it will impact Scorsese's storytelling.
