Will NetFlix Remain an Independent?

Will its massive growth take NetFlix out of the realm of the independents and into the arms of a huge corporation? Certainly it's in a better market position than chief rival Blockbuster, and as it continues to widen its lead in that competition, NetFlix could capture the attention of an even larger company and sell for billions. An interesting article at Yahoo! Finance (actually a Motley Fool piece featured on Yahoo!) makes the case that because NetFlix has performed so well over the past couple years where Blockbuster has not, closing over 500 US stores last year, and because it was ahead of the curve in the online streaming arena, the chance to buy NetFlix may be too good for one corporate entity to pass up. The candidates, according to Motley Fool, are probably Amazon, Apple, Microsoft, and Google. I've heard of those. Of the four, Apple has the most money (almost $40 billion and no debt), but Amazon makes the most sense. It's already a heavy duty retailer, which ties in perfectly, and it's in the movie rental business. However, Amazon has less money to throw at a purchase than the other three, and Apple also has a stake in movie rentals, so with all of its available cash, that might be the solution we're looking at. Apple and NetFlix already have a deal in place for the iPad, by the way. In other related news, NetFlix will now stream to your Wii and inked deals with Fox and Universal to wait 28 days to unveil new home video releases, something that had already happened with Warner Bros. So there's definitely more money to be made here, and the question is, will NetFlix get there on its own or at the behest of a bigger corporate property?
