Saturday, April 17, 2010 at 10:19AM Box Office - 'Kick-Ass,' 'Death at a Funeral' Open Flat
There will be no out-of-the-box explosion for Kick-Ass, although it should win the weekend by a comfortable margin. If you'll recall, on Thursday I said I wouldn't go over $30 million, but with the way fan reaction had buoyed Paranormal Activity, Avatar, Shutter Island, and Alice in Wonderland in the past few months, it was hard to tell how well this fanboy movie would do. The answer: Not over $30 million.

After a $7.5 million debut on Friday - with some late Thursday numbers thrown in - Kick-Ass appears to be headed toward the mid-20s, maybe $25 million on the nose, unless strong word of mouth really pushes the Saturday crowds. If Saturday gets to, say, $11 million, then the R-rated comic book movie has a chance at around $27 million, but anything more than that is hard to compute. In other words, it's probably going to be considered an opening weekend disappointment. Not horribly off - maybe 15 - 20% lower than estimates - but certainly noticeable.
Death at a Funeral and Date Night are in a virtual dead heat for second place, $2 million behind Kick-Ass. I would estimate that Date Night has a better chance of pulling ahead, because it has more theaters and Funeral's Friday just wasn't that strong. In fact, both new release appear to be headed for about $5 million lower than estimates.
Holdovers How to Train Your Dragon and Clash of the Titans will round out the top five, each between $12 and $15 million.
