Zooey Deschanel Does 19th Century Algorithims

Zooey Deschanel has never really caught on with mainstream crowds. She has, of course, resisted comic book movies and stuff, but she's not totally unknown to John Q. Moviegoer. Almost a year after (500) Days of Summer, while Joseph Gordon-Levitt is finding more lucrative roles, Deschanel is still keeping her independent spirit, locking in a role as the world's first computer programmer. Production Weekly Tweeted this week that Zooey will play Ada Lovelace in Bruce Beresford’s Enchantress of Numbers. Who is Ada Lovelace? Well, you've got to go back over 150 years. Yeah -- computers, before the civil war. Lovelace was the daughter of Lord Byron who, after marrying mathematician Charles Babbage, wrote notes on his analytical engine. Included in those notes, apparently, is the first algorithm meant to be processed by a machine. Her writing didn't take any real significance until the 1950s, and later, when the Department of Defense developed the ADA programming language, the name wasn't a coincidence. Who knows what she could have accomplished had she lived past the age of 36; Lovelace saw a future for computers (or whatever they would've been called in the 1840s) beyond computations. Beresford hopes to shoot Enchantress of Numbers this fall. Hard to see what the commercial appeal would be, though. As we illustrated, Deschanel isn't exactly, riding high on the success of The Blind Side or anything, and it's an obscure historical figure who made her mark with math. But Zooey's usually worth watching, even in those movies that don't measure up. And she'll get to use an English accent, which I also adopted while writing this article.
