Garrett Hedlund Going 'On the Road'

I had to look to make sure, but there's never been a movie version of Jack Kerouac's classic On the Road. That's apparently about to change. Production Weekly Tweeted (via Slashfilm) that Walter Salles (The Motorcycle Diaries) is developing the film and has apparently locked in on Garrett Hedlund (TRON Legacy) to star as Dean Moriarty. Salles's Motorcycle Diaries is a good proving ground for something like On the Road, or at least, it's as good as anything else. Coppola optioned the book over 30 years ago, but nothing ever materialized. Gus Van Sant had his eye on it, too, at one point. Salles grabbed the book about five years back, and now it appears he's moving forward with it. This could also have been a good match for Sean Penn after Into the Wild, but no matter who directs it, it's one of those novels that has to be adapted just right, like Atlas Shrugged. And that's easier said than done. Moriarty is based on Beat writer Neal Cassady, while Kerouac is personified by Sal Paradise. That role has also been cast, with Sam Riley from Control signing up for the film, which is expected to shoot this summer.

Jack Kerouac's masterpiece is a story many others have attempted to adapt on the big screen and this will not be the last one, now, having said that, I certainly hope this will be effectively well done if you see the people behind the project.
