Thursday, April 22, 2010 at 9:45AM Producer Says 'Friday the 13th' Sequel is Dead
I don't quite understand this, but there won't be a sequel to Friday the 13th. Sure, the remake that came out
last year wasn't very good, especially after the first 15 - 20 minutes, but it made a ton of money, and wasn't that the point all along?
I mean, it's isn't as if Platinum Dunes remade the horror classic for artistic reasons.
So, a movie that almost quintupled its production budget was scheduled to go into production this year for a 3-D sequel. But it hadn't
happened yet, which prompted a Twitter user to ask producer Brad Fuller about the film's status. "It is dead - not happening," replied
Fuller.
Bloody-Disgusting tracked down the exchange, and that's about as boiled down as it gets. The site checked with Fuller to see if the
update was legit, and he confirmed it again. So the only thing that can kill Jason is...apathy? It really doesn't add up, though, not
with A Nightmare on Elm Street poised to probably repeat the performance of Friday the 13th, which would reestablish
Platinum Dunes' position as a major player in the horror remake genre.
This wouldn't be the first remake the company has walked away from, more or less winding down its efforts on The Birds last year.
But that's a start-up and this is a sequel that already had a script and a returning heavy in Derek Mears.
It's puzzling A) That it has apparently fallen apart when the immediate plan was to put a part two together, and B) That it became public because somebody asked a question on Twitter. I wonder what we're not hearing about this.
