Thursday, April 22, 2010 at 7:07AM Taylor Lautner's 'Stretch Armstrong' Gets a Director
It seems like whenever I wake up thinking those articles I've written about Stretch Armstrong were just a dream, another story surfaces about the malleable toy movie that reminds me it's actually happening. There's still no logic behind it, but it's certainly being made.
The last development had something to do with Taylor Lautner, who will star as Stretch. Ironically, he's one of the least flexible actors I've seen in a long, long time. He does have good physicality, but his range is basically nonexistent. It'll be up to the director of Monsters vs. Aliens and Shark Tale to turn Lautner into a guy who can carry a movie all on his own.
Rob Letterman has been tapped to direct Stretch Armstrong, which Universal and Imagine Entertainment have in mind for 2012. That gives you time to stock up on canned goods for your bunker, because civilization may be coming to an end shortly thereafter. Letterman makes his feature live-action debut this December with Gulliver's Travels, another questionable update given the star (Jack Black). Maybe that's why Letterman got the job: He's now used to working with one-note actors in high-concept tentpoles.
Nicholas Stoller has been called in to rehash Steve Oedekerk's script, and that's fine - Stoller directed Forgetting Sarah Marshall and wrote Yes Man and Fun with Dick and Jane - but it's essential that this movie has a fresh script or it'll sink in a hurry.
