Monday, May 10, 2010 at 2:36PM Favreau Ordering Some Mandarin For 'Iron Man 3'
Where does Iron Man go from here? Exactly where you'd think the series would go, according to director Jon Favreau.
"You've got to do the Mandarin," said Favreau, revealing his vote for the Iron Man 3 villain to MTV. "The problem with the Mandarin is that the
way it's depicted in the comic books, you don't want to see that. He has 10 magical rings — that
just doesn't feel right for our [franchise]."
"So it's either tech-based, or the rings are not really rings. But maybe with Thor and all those others, you'll introduce magic to that world and it won't seem so out of place," Favs added.
The Mandarin is kind of like Iron Man's Joker. But they'd better hire a bad ass. A supreme martial artist on top of having the magical powers, you can't really get by just dropping a name actor in there who doesn't know what he's doing.
The trouble for Marvel is, who do you go out and get? Jackie Chan's probably the wrong choice, but I guess Jet Li would work. Not much of an actor in English, though. Also, he's very small.
This character's a sizable dude. Chow-Yun Fat is a marvelous presence and can do believable action, although Crouching Tiger was a decade ago. Ken Watanabe, though not Chinese, might be a good candidate, if he's fluid enough in the movements.
Faran Tahir, the actor who played Tony Stark's captor in the first Iron Man, said last year the idea was to have that character return as the Mandarin. But would Marvel take a chance on a lesser name actor?
But we're getting ahead of ourselves and Favreau, who said it's way to early to think about a movie that's three years away. "There's so much left to understand about what the world is going to be like then," the director cautioned. "You've got Thor, Captain America, Avengers all happening with different directors before Iron Man 3, and that's all going to affect Iron Man 3."
