Fox Working on Animated 'Napoleon Dynamite' Show

Well, the timing certainly couldn't be better: Fox is developing an animated TV version of Napoleon Dynamite. This might scare you to remember, but Dynamite is now six years old. Wow. MediaBistro reports that Fox has confirmed development of the show through a company spokesman. This doesn't means a series, at least not yet. Napoleon Dynamite is just a pilot right now, and if all goes according to plan, then it could wind up Sunday nights, which would make the most sense. The only problem is the network would have to move something to another night to accommodate that idea. According to MediaBistro, the gang's all here - Jon Heder, Efran Ramirez, Aaron Russell (Kip), and Jon Gries (Uncle Rico) are providing their voices to the series and Jared and Jerusha Hess are "closely involved" with the direction of the animated spin-off. Fox Searchlight released the film, and it was a huge smash, as you remember, particularly as a summer release that cost $400,000 to make. It became a cult classic once it hit DVD. And after that, Fox and Jared Hess began a relationship that has lated through Gentlemen Broncos, although the studio didn't really release it - 18 theaters total, 42 days, and just over $100,000. It's an easy enough story to revisit, in large part because it's not about anything. Very easy to make up scenarios involving Napoleon, Kip, and Pedro. But can audiences really care about it now?
