Sunday, May 2, 2010 at 8:16PM Poll: What Will Be The Biggest Summer Movie?
In less than a week, the summer box office season will kick off with Iron Man 2. It has a legitimate shot of being the year's biggest movie, in spite of the fact that it has more competition behind it than any other movie this year. So can it top Transformers from last summer? It'd need $400 million to do it.
However, one point in favor of Iron Man is that once May concludes, there are really only a handful of movies that have blockbuster potential, meaning that if the sequel's great it can make more money in June than it would in a much bigger summer. But if Iron Man stumbles, it also wouldn't be the first time a summer franchise dropped the ball in May. In fact, in the past two years, the X-Men and Narnia properties both got smacked around a bit.
So will Iron Man win the summer season, will the family friendly Shrek or Toy Story films take the top spot, or will Christopher Nolan's Inception or the new Twilight movie grab the most money? We'll keep this just to US box office because it's the most level playing field. And we'll limit the choices to the most likely movies to make at least $200 million. Also, if you want to make predictions about what movie will make how much money, or if you've got a suggestion not on the list, put it in the comments section below.

I voted for Ironman because of just how popular the first one was. The only thing holding me back from saying it will be an outright win is the reviews have been slightly mixed so it might do more typical sequel numbers. Shrek even if it gets the horrendous reviews it is to sure to get will probably be more likely to get that top spot. Series is quite a juggernaut and pretty invulnerable to reviews. Not sure where Inception is, but since no one else I know is aware of it, it might do surprisingly average.
I have to say Iron Man 2, if only because the rest don't really stand out as being outright winners. Toy Story 3 would be my 2nd vote. And unless Inception is just an amazing movie (which is very possible) and generates a ton of business by word of mouth, Iron Man 2 will likely win.
Surprised that Inception is the number 1 so far, i am excited to see it but i think most average random moviegoer has never heard of it let alone care that Christopher Nolan is directing with Leo in the lead role. I think it will be a great movie but unless more information about the movie comes out or it gets ridiculous praise and awesome word of mouth it will have no chance. Honestly as much as i could give a crap i believe Shrek will probably defeat the rest regardless. I chose Iron Man and i think it will easily win the money from adults but with the added kids i think Shrek will do it for this summer.
Has anyone really seen Inception yet? Like Avatar, its popularity could grow as positive word of mouth spreads, especially if it is something no one has ever seen before...
Still , this Summer seems pretty blah over all. I think Iron Man 2, if it somehow manages to capture what was special about the first one, should take home the prize.
4 idiots voted for twilight. that franchise should be burned to the ground; it's total garbage.
I remember Colin had this poll back at the beginning of the year with the same result. I still don't get it! Inception so far looks great but how can anyone think it is going to be the biggest movie of the summer? With the trailers and buzz for IronMan 2 it is almost guaranteed to beat the first one. That puts it at roughly $325 million already. Inception will not make that much. It does not have the Heath Ledger effect that The Dark Knight had going for it. Even with great word of mouth i see it maybe doing what The Hangover did last year. Shrek should be a lock for $300 million just with the name alone then throw in 3D pricing and you have probably $350 million. i still say IronMan 2 does close to $150 million opening weekend and $200 in 5 days. It should end up with close to $400 million if not more. I would be very shocked if anything beats Iron Man
There is no way that Inception will be number 1.
Inceptions online marketing has just started to pick up a lot. Plus for all of those people going to see Iron Man 2 there's going to be a new trailer during that movie. I bet at least half of each crowd seeing Iron Man 2 will see Inception just because it's mentions from the director of TDK. Plus as long as reviews are good ( which I think they will be) it should get around by word of mouth and be big, at least in the top two spots.
