Thursday, May 20, 2010 at 12:00AM 'Sex and the City 2' Has $10 Million Wardrobe Budget
Generally speaking, sequels do one thing really well: Spend a lot more money. And I've never understood it. The mantra "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" is a good rule to follow, so if it was a success the first time, why would you go about changing it just because it was a success before?
In the case of Sex and the City 2, this is actually the third time around, because it was a very popular TV show first, and for a few seasons, understandably so. They kept a lot of that same spirit alive for the movie, although the California/Mexico stuff was unnecessary. For Sex 2, of course, they're shooting all over hell's half-acre.
But the real added expense is the fashion. New York Magazine (via Cinema Blend) reports that the sequel spent - get this - $10 million on wardrobe. I know it takes a lot to make Sarah Jessica Parker look less troglodytic these days, but $10 million? For four characters?
How does it add up? How about a $4,000 pair of jeans matched with a $47,000 dress? That's the outfit in the picture above: $51K for a scene in a karaoke bar. Just one outfit!
If I may, I'll invoke the now-constant refrain of David Letterman, "This is why the rest of the world hates us." There are entire films that cost less than the clothes in this thing. Hell, Paranormal Activity cost one-third of what Parker's wearing in that picture. I get that the fashion is basically the fifth girlfriend, but this is just preposterous.

Wow....talk about perspective. That is rediculous. This IS why the rest of the world hates us.
That's gaudy as hell, seriously. I...this just angers me.
It started out as, and makes the claim that it still is, a step forward for womens liberation. Now it's just an extended commercial for clothes to make women feel their current wardrobe is inadequate.

can someone shoot these women
I mean what's wrong with that? other producers spend the money for special affects or new 3D cameras...their special effect are clothes! I don't understand the hype about the clothes!
@SEAN
I would love to shoot You!
That is the least of that sequel's problems, trust me. What SATC2 lacks is a decent script. Okay, so it's not boring - but all through the screening I was waiting for a real story to develop. Must be the curse of the sequel... SATC 1 was way, way better and a hell of a lot more satisfying.
Sarah Jessica Parker looked great in her Alexander McQueen black strapless dress and Philip Treacy hat at the UK premiere of Sex And The City 2 in London's Leicester Square. The movie reviews might not be brilliant but the girls brought out the crowds in London! http://www.fashionjournal.org/
