Are we a little bit closer to completing the Captain America cast? One hurdle is how to wedge Howard Stark, father of Tony, presence in Iron Man 2 home movies, into the 1940s, when The First Avenger: Captain America takes place. You can't have John Slattery back, so you have to find a younger guy to play him, because the elder Stark's impact on the Avengers arc just can't be erased.
Collider found an interview Salon conducted with Dominic Cooper, who confirmed he's landed the role of younger older Stark. Cooper was Amanda Seyfried's love interest in Mamma Mia! and for a couple years thereafter in real life, too. He has also been seen in An Education and stars opposite Gemma Arterton in Stephen Frears' Cannes entry, Tamara Drew.
While I'm still surprised, nay mortified, that Marvel is letting Joe Johnston direct such a pivotal movie, the cast has come together pretty well. They wasted months trying to find the right Captain America, but now that they've chosen Chris Evans, I think it's fine. Maybe he'll be great, but I doubt he'll be awful. Hugo Weaving as Red Skull is the way to go, Sebastian Stan is Bucky Barnes, British actress Haylely Atwell will play the love interest, Peggy Carter, and Toby Jones has landed the role of Arnim Zola. All in all, that's a decent hand.
Captain America shoots this summer in London and opens next July. I don't think it's quite been pulled out of the fire the way Thor has been over the past year, but it's stopped worrying me so much.
