Friday, May 28, 2010 at 11:43AM Warners Sets Dates for 'Sherlock,' 'Potter,' and More
Some new release dates from Warner Bros. have been revealed, and since that studio is the top dog in the business these days, it's likely we'll see other studios place their movies around this list.
Heat Vision Blog has the details behind the details, and I'm sure you might be interested to learn that on top of the movies that have release dates, the studio is embracing The Flash, which doesn't yet have a release date or anything else. Wonder Woman? Anyone? Anyone? Yes, it appears that development on that movie is finally starting to happen again.
So here's what we know for 2011 from Warners. The studio plans to release about 25 movies, probably a little less than that, but certainly a couple movies on month on average. You can do that when you're the first studio to gross $2 billion in the US alone in 12 months. Some of these aren't brand new, but it's good to see a more complete picture of what the studio has up its sleeve for next year.
Red Riding Hood with Amanda Seyfried has shortened its name from The Girl With the Red Riding Hood, as we've already reported would happen. It's now due out on April 22nd. The Hangover 2 is a month after that, opening on Memorial Day weekend next year. A series of 3-D movies follow: Green Lantern (June 17th), Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II (July 15th), Journey to the Center of the Earth 2 (September 23rd), and Happy Feet 2 (November 18th). Wrapping up the year, at least for this slate, is the oddly-timed New Year's Eve (December 9th) and Sherlock Holmes 2 (December 16th).
The last Potter might do some business, and I think Hangover and Green Lantern have big potential. But why is New Year's Eve opening before Christmas? Why not roll it out on December 30th? It's usually a dead weekend, so it wouldn't take much to score a big hit there. As it is, Warner will be facing Tintin, Hugo Cabret, Alvin and the Friggin' Chipmunks, and Mission: Impossible IV, plus a host of awards movies that we won't even know about for another 15 - 16 months...and its own studio's Sherlock 2.
Sure, New Year's Eve is a rom-com, essentially operating as an extension of premise for He's Just Not That Into Valentine's Day, but those movies were both opening day hits, disappearing very, very quickly. Tougher to make that mark if there's more competition, especially family-oriented stuff that might draw a big chunk of the mommy crowd.

A Flash movie sounds cool and would be great to see it have Zoom as the main villain. As much as I'd love to see the Rogues all on screen together, there's just too many of them. It's almost too big a concept to fit into a movie and is something that'd work better a TV Series (a new one) and would allow you to introduce the extended Flash family of characters.
They also mention an Aquaman movie, I can't wait for that! I hope James Cameron gets on that one.
Then Aquaman really would be the top grossing super-hero movie of all time...as long as Vincent Chase and Mandy Moore are involved as well, of course.
