Monday, May 31, 2010 at 3:00PM Box Office - 'Sex and the City 2' Falling Fast
There will be a lot of Tuesday morning quarterbacking over the relative failure of Sex and the City 2. The Monday estimates, when added to the weekend numbers, only amount to $51 million and change. Remember, two years ago, this series had a $57 million three-day weekend, toppling Indiana Jones on its way to $150-something million. But that won't happen a second time.
Instead, the film has dropped behind Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, not just on Monday, where estimates indicate it trails the poorly performing video game movie by almost $2 million, but since Friday (by nearly a million bucks). The Thursday start was big - $14 million - but ever since, the sequel has lost its footing, and by the time next weekend is through, Sex 2 will probably be looking up at $80 million, about 20% less than its predecessor.
Another bad sign is that the first Sex and the City fell off the rails in its second weekend, dropping nearly 63% to only earn $21 million in early June. If the sequel mirrors that performance relative to its earlier cooling trend, it might only make about $15 million next weekend, since so much of its current $51 million arrived on opening day.
The answer, I think, is that the movie's horrible. I know several women, all fans of the series, who think the movie has ruined the legacy of the show, and they've said that sight unseen. So they're not paying to see it, and I think that's reflective of a larger point of view. Usually sequels do better, even if they are worse movies, but Sex and the City fans didn't exactly love the first movie, either, so their allegiance is to the show, not this stupid parade of expensive costumes with no story.
The film will make money, but it won't hit the 300% number Warner Bros. likes to see. That would mean the film would generate a cool $300 million worldwide, and I can't see that happening, not as quickly as this will die, which it appears to have already done.
In the meantime, Shrek Forever After, which started very slow, might win three straight weekends, since none of this Friday's films will be in 3,500 theaters. Marmaduke is the biggest opener, but can it make $25 million or more? That's what it would probably need to beat Shrek next weekend.

it seems like the movie does get more attarctions than many but not so as the sherk i did love the animation movie but there are more color i saw in the movie sex and the city. therefore we did head to the sex city girls movie before and then after to the animated final encounter. for me to be true to my heart both of the movies are brilliant.

Good riddance already: We can only hope this means there won't be a third movie in 3D *shudder*...
