Monday, May 31, 2010 at 9:12AM New Line Can't Explain 'Final Destination' Success
It's nearly a year old, but The Final Destination is still playing in some theaters around the world, even as the fifth film starts gearing up for production. Of course, it wasn't supposed to happen this way; New Line had every intention of putting the franchise out to pasture after four movies, hence the finality of the title. Even in this series, The Final Destination speaks with more resolve than Final Destination 3.

But nobody counted on it making this much money. Not even New Line, as Vulture reports, quoting a studio executive, “It’s the worst film of the franchise. And that’s not my opinion; that’s everyone’s opinion.” Certainly, 3-D helped it in the short term in the US, but overseas? Who knows. There aren't as many possibilities for 3-D revenue, for starters, and beyond that, the movie has just killed it in foreign territories, earning a whopping $115 million overseas. For horror, that's a phenomenal number.
"Some areas seem particularly crazy about death," writes Vulture. "Colombia’s grosses quintupled from the third film in the franchise. Australian grosses are three and a half times greater. Dutch, Israeli, and German grosses tripled. And French and Brazilian grosses doubled."
Notable recent supernatural horror movies this film has or will likely surpass overseas include The Others, The Ring, The Grudge, and The Omen. In fact, within that sub-category of horror, the only movies currently ahead of it in foreign dollars are The Ring ($120 million) and What Lies Beneath ($135 million), but that one really shouldn't count; it's more of a suspense thriller. Broadening the search a little bit, no slasher movie even comes close to this movie's international output. Who knew?
Not New Line, that's for sure. But they're hoping more money can be found in a franchise they had admittedly given up on, and are trying to narrow the search for a director now, as Final Destination 5 opens next August.

Personally, i'm not surprised at all by the success of this franchise. It is based on a very clever concept. I knew there would be many sequels. Expect many more to come.
This was one of the films that the 3D worked to make the film. I said awhile back in the whole 3D debate that it does add to some movies and this was one of them. I thought this was a horrible movie. The acting was some of the worst i had ever seen. But when i left the theater i was satisfied. The 3D made this movie entertaining. I guess maybe it just works for horror movies because My Bloody Valentine was very entertaining as well. I thought Destination had some of the best use of the 3D i have seen. I'll go watch another one, i just hope the acting can get a little better
