'Iron Man 2' Leaked Online

It happened last year, and it happened this year. The circumstances are different, but much like summer lead-off hitter X-Men Origins: Wolverine was leaked online before it was released, Iron Man 2 has now popped up online. HitFix relays the information that the Marvel movie has become available on Bit Torrent and other peer-to-peer sites on the web. The culprit is notoriously bad policing efforts in foreign countries, which produce a fair amount of all the illegal copies found online. The World Cup is actually one of the reasons Paramount decided to leapfrog the US release overseas, and the studio had to know this would be a likely outcome. Will it impact Iron Man? Well, you could argue that piracy's influence is still very minor even though the numbers keep going up. I mean, a movie just made about $3 billion worldwide in what was already the top-earning year in history, so people are still paying to see movies. And for Iron Man 2, the lost revenue should be a drop in the bucket. While Wolverine was released online weeks before the official debut, the film wasn't ever going to make $300 million, anyway. Iron Man could surpass Wolverine's domestic total in five or six days, and with only a handful of days to grab the movie online, it probably isn't going to get bruised too badly. The other consideration is this: What kind of idiot would download a camcorder version of a $200 million special effects movie? And why? Just so you don't have to spend $10? That's like stealing ketchup packets from Burger King (proud sponsor of Iron Man) instead of just buying a new bottle.
