Wednesday, May 5, 2010 at 12:09PM Sam Rockwell Joins Favreau's 'Cowboys and Aliens'
Cowboys and Aliens seems to have recovered quite nicely from Robert Downey, Jr.'s departure a couple months ago. He was replaced by Daniel Craig in Jon Favreau's upcoming comic book flick, and shortly thereafter, Olivia Wilde and Harrison Ford tagged along.
Now Heat Vision Blog says that Favreau will have an Iron Man 2 cast member in his next film, with Sam Rockwell signing up to play a bar owner in the Wild West who aids Daniel Craig in his fight against the aliens. When Rockwell told Favreau he was interested in the film, the director and writers Kurtzman, Orci, and Lindelof "reconceived and expanded the role, which initially
called for a heavy-set man."
Well, that's good news. Rockwell can easily be the best thing about any film, and he has a habit of stealing movies when he's got a supporting role (Green Mile, Galaxy Quest, Charlie's Angels, and Galaxy Quest again), so I'm glad they're realizing the lightning in a bottle that might be waiting for them here by expanding Rockwell's role.
The movie gets underway in June, after Favs winds down his publicity duties for Iron Man, and Cowboys and Aliens opens July 29th next year.

You are absolutely right about Rockwell... I've never seen him in a supporting role that I didn't walk out of the movie thinking he wasn't the best thing in it. The guy is magic. It's because he actually WORKS unlike a lot of actors who coast on their fame and personality to phone in performances. Sam actually cares about his craft.
