Monday, June 14, 2010 at 3:09AM Denzel, Scarlett, Zeta-Jones Win...Tony Awards?
It was a big night for Hollywood on Broadway, with stars far better known for their work on screen were rewarded for recent work on stage. The Tony Awards honored Red as the best drama, and it was written by frequent Martin Scorsese collaborator John Logan. Memphis was named Best Musical.

But the big news was acting awards for Denzel Washington for the revival of August Wilson's Fences, Scarlett Johansson in what I believe is her Broadway debut, starring opposite Liev Schreiber in Arthur Miller's A View from the Bridge, and a musical win for Catherine Zeta-Jones in A Little Night Music.
Writes The Hollywood Reporter of the mainstream trend, "Major productions without marquee names, particularly of plays, are becoming increasingly unviable, as evidenced this season by the commercial struggle of the well-reviewed Next Fall."
Yes, things are tough all over, and Broadway has borne the brunt of a bad economy more than film and TV, although it has a stronger pulse than the music industry. But the quick fix, which I hope and I'm sure a couple generations of stage actors hope is also a temporary fix, is to pay Hollywood stars to lead major productions. That's why the Leading Actor nominees were Jude Law, Alfred Molina, Schreiber, Christopher Walken, and Washington.
That isn't to say, of course, that Denzel and Scarlett can't act; we know Denzel's one of the most reliable movie stars going and Scarlett can act, though her Hollywood career offers little evidence in the past few years. But their presence sells tickets and without that, there'd be fewer and fewer productions to shine a light on every year. Kind of a catch-22.

I feel like this is lame. I mean just b/c their Hollywood names, big names, they win the awards???
I mean come on....
However I must say, Denzel deserves the win, from what I have seen in clips, he was phenomenal as well as his partner on stage Viola Davis who also won.
But Scarlett did not! A View From the Bridge is a very difficult play & her role is extremely tough & I dont think she fit the part or played it well at all. Liev Shreiber on the other hand, her stage partner, seemed excellent
Jude Law, Molina, & Walken all brilliant. I was really torn between Law winning for Hamlet or Denzel for Fences, I couldnt decide.
I hope the theatre somehow survives without these big name actors, I hope people keep it alive & the economy bounces back as soon as possible
