'Twould be cynical to say M. Night Shyamalan made The Last Airbender because his public image had taken a Van der Slooting over the past three or four years to the point that he had considerable trouble getting studio backing for The Happening. When that received some of the worst reviews of 2008 (although it made enough money to be profitable, if not very successful), it looked like his career would take some serious rebuilding.

So, enter a ready-made hit. One that actually looks pretty good, and one that Night did write and direct per his usual, but that he didn't have to conceptualize. Everything he needs to work with is already in place, by and large. So yes, it might be cynical to look at this as a springboard, except...
The writer-director is already talking to studios about what's next, an original project that according to The Hollywood Reporter "loosely" has Gwyneth Paltrow, Bradley Cooper, and Bruce Willis attached to star. Cooper's on his way up, but with A-Team not meeting expectations, I'm not sure the combination of these names sweetens the offer or not.
"Shyamalan is famously secretive, and this project is no exception," writes Heat Vision. "Only top studio execs have read the script, and they were required to allow a Shyamalan assistant to supervise the process. When the execs finished reading, the assistant took the script back and left."
So we'll see where this goes. I hope Night has learned from his previous mistakes and tells a nice linear story for a change. That, I think, he could certainly do very well. And it's probably what he needs.

all i gotta say is I hope he doesnt screw this up I think makinging a movie per book in the series was the best thing he can do. He needs to keep the story there so dont be afraid to make it long movie. people started liking those since LOTR came out I meen I have watched all 3 extended movies in a day and thats a feat. He needs to just focus on this series maybe watch it 50 times or so. so far cast looks fine. uncle iro better be funny like he is in the show same with sakka. If he focuses on these 3 movies the avatar books and nails it his image will change dramaticly. because this is one of the greatest cartoons in my opinion.
I think i am one of the few that enjoyed The Happening. In fact, the only movie i didn't like by Night was Lady In The Water
