Sunday, June 27, 2010 at 8:02PM Sony Views 'Spider-Man' Candidates' Screen Tests
We still don't know who will play Peter Parker in Spider-Man, the second in-decade reboot of a Marvel Comics character. I suppose it's a good thing that it's taking this long, because you're looking at another trilogy (at least, but probably just three films), and there's no point in Sony going all-out if they're not really going to go all-out.

So here we are...at the screen test stage. We do know that director Marc Webb and the studio has its favorites and Deadline says their screen tests were viewed on Friday. Jamie Bell, Anton Yelchin, Aaron Johnson, Andrew Garfield, Logan Lerman, and Alden Ehrenreich have had their turn, and at least two others - Michaeal Angarano and Frank Dillane - have been in this group, but there's no confirmation Angarano was looked at last week and Dillane decided against it to pursue drama school at RADA.
That list has been juggled a bit. Anton Yelchin was not in the running before, for example, and he's the biggest name on the list, starring in Star Trek and leading the upcoming remake of Fright Night. Also, Josh Hutcherson was in and, at least through Friday, wasn't screen tested, apparently. Also, Logan Lerman, the original rumored frontrunner when all this news broke, and then not involved at all, is suddenly back in the mix.
That should mean our new Spidey could be unveiled at Comic Con, because it's doubtful they'll keep adding names to the list. So, a decision shouldn't be more than a couple weeks away. That's why they screen test, after all. That's my guess - Comic Con. Makes a world of sense.
Deadline says Sony wants to shoot around the end of the year, and again, this doesn't open until May 2012. So that enables Sony some more time upfront to polish James Vanderbilt's script and get the rest of the cast together before going into a production schedule that could take a number of months, thanks to the addition of 3-D gear and the studio's desire to get the new direction for the franchise off on the right foot.
