Saturday, June 5, 2010 at 7:14PM Willis, Whitaker, Akerman Caught in a 'Catch .44'
More Bruce Willis movies with gunplay are on the way. Exasperated that he seems to be taking any offer at this point, most of which are regurgitated action flicks, I implored Bruce Willis this week to "put down the gun." Not yet, I guess.
Willis, Forest Whitaker, and Malin Akerman are lining up a new independent feature called Catch .44, and the clever play on words implies a catch-22 scenario, only with revolvers. Akerman is one of three women "thrust into an extraordinary situation involving a psychopath hitman, played by Whitaker, a grizzled trucker, and a delusional line cook," according to Variety, and if I had a nickel for every time that's happened to me...
Bruce is neither the trucker nor the line cook but rather a crime boss who concocts the whole scheme. We also know that Kate Mara will be in the cast, but Variety doesn't say if she's going to play one of the other tormented women. My guess is yes.
The film shoots in Louisiana this summer, which had finally started putting one foot in front of the other after Hurrican Katrina. Now with this oil spill disaster, it looks like another big recovery for the Gulf Coast will occupy the next several years. If there's a silver lining, lots of production companies now use Louisiana to shoot all their films. The WWE, which makes a movie about every two months, does almost everything down there now, and obviously, bigger films like Green Lantern are taking advantage of the tax breaks and putting people to work down there. So it's nice to see that commitment from the entertainment industry, especially these days.
First-time director Aaron Harvey will direct Catch .44 from his own script, and we won't know a thing about possible distribution for quite a while.
