Sunday, June 6, 2010 at 8:26AM Hilary Swank Starring in John Carpenter's 'Fangland'
There has been renewed interest in John Carpenter over the past few years - a new Fog, a pretty intense Assault on Precinct 13 remake, the Rob Zombie Halloween flicks, and upcoming fresh starts for Escape from New York and The Thing. But Carpenter himself has not been very active lately, until now.
Cinema Blend says he'll direct Hilary Swank in an adaptation of the John Marks novel Fangland. As you might have guessed, it's a vampire flick. Swank has won a couple Oscars, but since Million Dollar Baby, there hasn't been, well, anything to take note of.
The Black Dahlia might be the worst major film of Brin De Palma's career (and that's saying something), Freedom Writers is no great shakes, The Reaping is embarrassing, Birds of America never made it to theaters, P.S. I Love You sucked, and Amelia was a bad, bad biopic. So maybe she's overdue?
I'm not saying this will be the role to turn things around, but it's exciting to have a new Carpenter film, since he, too, could use a hit. He has The Ward coming out later this year, plus a couple other lower budget flicks already planned, so maybe one of these will recapture those golden years.
Here's the rundown:

"Swank will play Evangeline Harker, a producer on a 60 Minutes-esque show, who travels to Transylvania to do a story on a Romanian gangster. While there, she discovers a monstrous secret and is abducted. Months later, she is found recuperating in a monastery with no memory of what happened. But after she returns to New York, strange occurrences begin that nobody can explain."
