Thursday, July 1, 2010 at 5:36AM Rumor Patrol: Johnny Depp as Doctor Who?
I want you to pick up the nearest salt shaker and take a grain, maybe even two, and add them to this story to taste. Johnny Depp, it is
rumored, has been confirmed for Doctor
Who. Well, see, on the one hand, there's very little Depp couldn't do. On the other hand...does he have to do
everything?

The source of the rumor is PubArticles, which is a bit suspicious, but now the original isn't even online, so it's downgraded to dubious. However, Tor.com picked it up, and that's a far more reputable sci-fi blog, so because it's definitely
interesting, we thought we'd address it.
I can buy Depp as the Doctor, of course, and that's one way to sell tickets where, sadly, a David Tennant probably would not outside the fanbase the
BBC series already has. Personally, I don't think Depp has any time in his schedule for something like this, especially since the story has a
Doctor Who film out in two years. That just can't happen, not with Pirates, Dark Shadows, and The Lone Ranger all on the way, as
well as some smaller films he'll pop up in and the promotional tours for the tentpoles.
Here's the rumor:

Long-time producer of the television series Russell T. Davies reported that the reason he moved on from the show was due to the opportunity to transform the Doctor to the big screen. “Bringing the Who franchise to the theaters is a regeneration for the character beyond the usual one. A theatrical release has a greater range and can reach millions of more people than just the fans. There will be brand new concepts and the film will be just as adventurous, scary and humorous as the television programme. "But none of us working the film will forget what makes the character great and interesting and the long-time fans will not be disappointed because yes, the Daleks make an appearance.”So that sounds legit enough. As for how Johnny Depp got wrapped up in this, I have no idea. I think that's somebody's dream casting, but if it's not going to be Tennant, who - along with Davies' efforts to reboot the series the right way about five years ago - is the reason the Doctor is back in vogue after all these years, I'd like them find a way to keep it interesting without going overboard, and I think at this stage, Depp might be going overboard.

I'd like to see not so big a name with this. Maybe someone like James McAvoy?
What garbage is this!?!? Matt Smith just picked up the role (unless this is only speculation on the "movie" side of the house) and he is doing an exceptional job. And didn't he sign on for 3 years? I would absolutely HATE seeing Johnny Depp in the role. I don't think you need a big name to make it a hit and trying to find someone that appeals to international or American audiences solely for that fact has rarely been a good idea. I'm an American and have been watching the show since I was a very young teenager (I'm David's age). Now my children watch it with me and we all adore it still. The BBC has a gem and they don't need to put someone like Depp in the role to make it more incredibly popular than it already is. It's breaking records on BBC America with Matt...why mess with a superb product. I think the whole rumor of J.D. playing the Doctor was concocted by someone with too much time on their hands!
