Saturday, July 10, 2010 at 2:53AM 'Wicked' Movie Adaptation Getting Closer and Closer
This has been slowly moving forward for some time, and I don't know why it didn't progress more aggressively, but Deadline says that Wicked is finally getting on track as a big screen musical. We reported something about it a couple years ago, but nothing happened at that point, but this might be the light at the end of the tunnel.

Universal will make the movie, and that's good news for the long-struggling studio, because this thing will make plenty of worldwide bank. What if it's not good? No worries: Look at Mamma Mia!, after all.
The speculation is that the recent success of Alice in Wonderland is responsible for Wicked being a strong consideration again, and with all the other Wizard of Oz movies slated to come out in the next couple years, here's one that's as close to a sure thing as it gets. Speaking of Mamma Mia! and sure things, the studio is working on that sequel and a couple other musicals, too, so Wicked is an important part of those plans.
Here are the directors who have already been interviewed for the job or have at least expressed interest: J.J. Abrams, Ryan Murphy from Glee, James Mangold, and Rob Marshall. Obviously, Marshall and Murphy have the right kind of experience. If I had to guess, I'd pick Marshall. But Mangold is an intriguing prospect, though would he outshine J.J. Abrams? That is, obviously, the the most eye-popping name on the list. I doubt that would happen because J.J. would probably prefer co-producing through Bad Robot, and that may not be an option.
The musical is still big business on Broadway and on tour and as Deadline notes, it shows no immediate signs of slowing down. That's another reason the movie wasn't a big priority until now, as all of Hollywood tries to cash in on familiar stories.
