Tuesday, July 13, 2010 at 11:34PM Trailer - The Night Shyamalan-Produced 'Devil'
Good timing, eh? On the heels of M. Night Shyamalan's worst-received movie to date, Universal changed the name of its upcoming collaboration with him from The Night Chronicles: Devil to simply Devil. And while the bad press is still rolling in, despite decent box office, here's the first trailer for Devil.
It appears to be an elevator thrilla, with a group of strangers trapped in a lift when all sorts of supernatural stuff starts happening. Seems like an easy setup, as single-location movies kind of have to be. Night didn't write or direct this, but the story is "from the mind of M. Night Shyamalan," and the production itself is partially from the pocket of Night Shyamalan, too.
John Erick Dowdle is actually the director (IMDB also lists brother Drew Dowdle), and the new trailer for his flick is pretty substantial for this kind of thing, which is why it may have been smarter to wait a couple weeks to release it so the movie is clear from Last Airbender blowback.
Devil opens on September 17th.

This actually looks good and has an original concept. M. Knight should probably stick with writing and leave the directing to others.
It does say "Story by M. Night Shyamalan". I have yet to see "The Last Airbender", but I am a HUGE M. Night fan, and have enjoyed every movie he has done. Not sure why the critics are so hard on him - I had goosebumps in the first 10 minutes of "The Happening", but the critics didn't like it! With so many comic book adaptations, rom-coms, remakes, and sequels around, I always find his films to be completely original and entertaining. I think his only fault was to have his first film ( The Sixth Sense ) be absolutely perfect! "Signs" is a movie that does not have one inch of wasted film - every shot is filled with meaning, and contributes to the story. He can be an AMAZING director, and I hope he continues. Critics are there to criticize - it's their job. I just like watching movies.
This looks immense.
And good on you, Rob! It's nice to hear a little positivity with regards to Night.
