Thursday, July 15, 2010 at 10:05AM Video: Carell and Rudd Spoof LeBron's 'Decision'
An entertaining bit of video from ESPN, which on its own deserves applause because of how rare that happens anymore. Seriously, what happened to ESPN? It used to be about sports, now it's about ESPN's coverage of sports. The games, the seasons, the outcomes - they simply don't matter anymore.

That's what makes this a good concept, although you still need the execution for it to be anything. Taking a shot at itself and last week's televised circus called LeBron James: The Decision, an hour-long announcement of which team James would play for next, Steve Carell and Paul Rudd have put together their own decision, with Carell in LeBron's seat and Paul Rudd as a much better Jim Gray than Jim Gray could ever be.
The tie-in, of course, is Carell's and Rudd's Dinner for Schmucks, which is out in a couple weeks. That's not mentioned in the bit, but you do get that sense of how well these two guys can work together, as if you didn't already know that.

Maybe this is my opinion, but Steve Carell playing it dry comes off as funnier than him playing it completely outrageous.
Almost always, yes.
That was one of my gripes with the Dinner for Schmucks trailers. They show Carell as being too outrageous which can be irritating. Having caught a screening, I thought he was funny at points, but he has the kind of schtick which can get tiresome and it did at points.
