Tom Felton Will Witness the 'Rise of the Apes'

Tom Felton is gathering no moss, moving from one franchise to another one (potentially). The Harry Potter co-star has signed on to next summer's Rise of the Apes, the Planet of the Apes prequel/reboot I'm growing weary of detailing. But let's run it down one more time because it is a tad involved if you don't know there were ever other Apes movies. In fact, there were five between 1968 and 1973, and Rise of the Apes is based on the fourth one, Conquest of..., which I've always held up as the best of the rest. In Rise, Felton will play the son of Brian Cox, who owns a scientific testing center where experiments on apes are conducted. In the update, researchers are trying to cure Alzheimer's through animal testing - so there's your obligatory social outcry statement in a movie tangentially about science - although it's not clear if Felton's on the right side of the debate. He's very good at oily villainy, but you can't do that forever, I suppose. For relatively unheralded director Rupert Wyatt, this will either begin a career in Hollywood or stop it cold. He's been given the keys to what Fox hopes will revive one of its most recognizable brands, historically, but the studio has put him behind the 8-ball, insisting this shows up in theaters next June. With all the apes being CGI, that could pose a problem, and it's not like Wyatt has directed Jurassic Park or anything. This is a real baptism by fire. Felton joins Cox, James Franco, Freida Pinto, Jon Lithgow, and Andy Serkis, with Don Cheadle still unconfirmed. The movie's shooting now in Vancouver.
