First Look at the Asgardian Throne Room in 'Thor'

I was telling a friend of mine over the weekend, vis-à-vis Marvel's Avengers arc, that there's real irony that the movie that looks the best after the first Iron Man is Kenneth Branagh's Thor. He's the least mainstream of the heroes, Branagh's not an action director, and it's the most difficult of the four stories to put on screen. And yet...

It's Asgard, as you can probably tell if you've spent any time reading Thor. I'm told that in that picture of the throne room are glimpses of Frigga, Loki's helmet, Hogan, and Fandral. My own "yeah, but" about Thor is how they're going to mix the two distinct worlds, which are for these purposes, New Mexico and some otherworldly plane we can only begin to imagine. That, coupled with who they'd get to play Thor, were always my sticking points. I still need to see more Asgard, but I'm perfectly fine with Chris Hemsworth, even though I wouldn't have picked him out a line-up, I don't think. But when you look at all the trouble that befell Iron Man 2 with the casting and salary gripes and how Captain America is overloaded with other heroes in the second half of the movie...and it's directed by Joe Johnston, or how Avengers, in addition to possibly being too massive to ever be satisfying also has had to deal with this Edward Norton thing, Thor seems like the only one that's gotten better over time. And now, of all things, Thor, that least likely of the big Marvel movies, kicks off summer 2011 on May 6th.

Maybe this will be the movie that pushes Thor into the "main-stream." I don't think Iron Man was too known by people other than comic book readers before the first movie came out, but now he's huge.

Color me unimpressed. It looks like some awards show stage to me and is only slightly better than that other pic with the metallic molded suits. Sure, I expect grandeur but I'd expect it with more subtlety and flow. Something that you look at and go "whoa, how'd they manage to do that?". What I've seen so far looks too overly polished and man-made. There's nothing new or godlike to any of it and the casting... yeh, we'll see how well it all comes together but for now I'm setting a low bar on expectations.
