Tuesday, July 27, 2010 at 6:49AM Rihanna Boards 'Battleship'
I heard an interesting development about Battleship the other that, on its own, wasn't a good enough reason to write it
up. So we'll get there in a minute. First, the big casting news: The lovely Rihanna will co-star in Peter Berg's new board game adaptation that really
isn't.

It will be the singer's film debut, and I have no idea what she'd be doing, and neither does Coming Soon, who broke the news. We do know that Taylor
Kitsch (Friday Night Lights, Wolverine) and Alexander Skarsgård (True Blood, not Thor) will play brothers, and that's kind of
strange, and we know that they're both Naval officers. But that's about it to this point.
I did hear a plot development, though. So why is it about aliens? Well, here's the thing. Apparently, all the world's super powers are engaged in a kind of war games exercise when an alien invasion breaks out. That's what I was told. Why that's better than a WWII naval battle, I still can't answer, other than the theory that it's less expensive to shoot the future than shoot the past, meaning you can more easily create aliens and those explosions than you can replicate history through visual effects.
Still...aliens? I mean, I think the war games thing that gets thrown into a real situation is a good turn, but it seems like an awfully long way to go, especially since Peter Berg is a naval history buff and that was part of his attraction to the project.

Sorry, I simply cannot get my head around the term 'board game adaptation'.
Rihanna should be a pleasant distraction, though.

Not as pleasant as staying home will be.
