Wednesday, July 28, 2010 at 3:21PM Damon Lindelof Rewriting 'Alien' Prequel
Minus Carlton Cuse and without the safety net of J.J. Abrams and Bad Robot, Damon Lindelof is charting off on his own, agreeing to terms to rewrite Ridley Scott's prequel to Alien for 20th Century Fox.

Deadline has the story this afternoon, and from the sounds of it, it won't be one of those rewrite situations where a guy emphasizes or de-emphasizes a character here or there or adds an action scene or two featuring punchy dialogue. It sounds like an overhaul.
In a development as vexing as a Lost plotline, studio insiders said that while Lindelof indeed met with Scott and the studio for that rewrite job, the exchange of ideas between them sparked a take that could well turn out to be a free-standing science fiction film.
Lost is, of course, the natural place to jump when talking about Lindelof. He and Cuse more or less ran the show the majority of the time, even developing it with Abrams from the very beginning. But they're not listed as co-writers on Abrams' Star Trek sequel or the Cowboys & Aliens script, although fellow Abrams alums Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman are.
So why the solo project? Probably because he can, he's established himself in the realm of science fiction as a writer and producer and maybe (maybe) this gives him a little more stake in the success of an Alien film, financially as well as creatively.
But Fox has no set deadline yet for when the screenplay is due, and that gives Scott a chance to go make something else first, and he's got plenty of projects to choose from.
