Wednesday, July 28, 2010 at 12:48PM Why Ant-Man Won't Be in 'The Avengers'
When the cast of The Avengers was officially introduced at Comic-Con on Saturday night, we wondered if Ant-Man was no longer part of the equation or if a contract hadn't been set in stone with an actor yet, or if it was just too early to tell what role he might play. Turns out, Joss Whedon said just hours before the Avengers panel that there would be no Ant-Man, not that the film will miss another hero.

There's more to it than that, however, as Cinema Blend discovered when talking to Edgar Wright. Wright is the director of the upcoming Scott Pilgrim vs. The World as well as Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead, and he's the guy giving Ant-Man a movie makeover, too. And he says having the character in The Avengers really doesn't work.

"I talked to Kevin Feige about that a while back where we just discussed about whether he would be in The Avengers. The thing is, the script that I’ve written, you know, whether it’s next or not I don’t know, the chronology of it or the way it works wouldn’t really fit in with what they do. "And my film is very much an introduction to that character, and so it wasn’t something where it felt right to introduce him in that film. Maybe if I do the solo Ant-Man film and maybe there’s a later Avengers then they could draft him in later. But it didn’t work with the kind of the angle that we were going to do with the origin that I’d written."So there. I also think the actual chronology is tougher to make work. We don't know for certain when Ant-Man is being produced or released, and we do know Avengers is shooting early next year. There are not a lot of summer windows left for Ant-Man before Avengers opens in May 2012, though, and so far, all the Avengers flicks have been summer fare. Plus, given the typical production schedule Marvel has set up at Paramount (although this could conceivably be a Disney movie, another reason you don't want him in Avengers), Ant-Man would almost have to be in front of cameras within the next six to eight months to work for Marvel. There was a report back in April that the standalone Ant-Man flick would arrive after Avengers, anyway, so it looks like we'll be waiting a while.

Can't believe this character is so popular??? Jeeze Hawkeye anyone?
Hawkeye is in Avengers, and his spin-off will follow.
I don't know, I mean, this could be an awesome opportunity to explore the whole abusive marriage/DV angle through the lens of superheroism, provided they don't Disnefy it too much. The character has a moral ambiguity about him that frankly doesn't get touched on in the broader culture, and needs to.
Great post. Thanks for sharing your experience. Religion would tell us that we should enjoy the cage and then if we do God would move you to a bigger and better cage :D If we are impatient with the cage then we are unenlightened, relbellious jerks...Replica 38mm Model Bell & Ross Watches
pretty sure it's because they just didn't want a wife beater to be depicted as a hero.
