Stanley Tucci is going back behind the camera to direct Meryl Streep and
Tina Fey in the comedy Mommy & Me for Sony, and that has "sizable mid-budget hit" written
all over it.

Streep, somehow, has moved from arthouse and critical darling to a very bankable star who still
gets praise from the press and her peers. Well, she is the best actress we've ever seen, even
though specific evidence of being that good is more difficult to come by these days. Great
in Doubt and just as good in Julie & Julia, which was lighter fare but still a big
challenge. Streep is also one of the few stars of any variety that can show up and a $100 million
return happens like magic.
Fey, while not as big a star, was part of two films that did pretty strong business in the past
couple years - Baby Mama and Date Night - and she's about as well-respected as any
comedian in show business. She and Streep make a very good combo, and The Hollywood
Reporter say the film "spotlights the thorny and funny sides of mother-daughter
relationships."
Tucci hasn't directed a film in ten years, and he's best known as a director for Big
Night, which he made with Campbell Scott. But this would be his fourth film and it goes
without saying that it offers the most chance for success upfront. He's also an executive producer, along with Steve Buscemi, but there's no word yet on whether either guy will be on screen. Seems a waste if not, though.
