J.J. Abrams Producing 'Boilerplate' Movie Adaptation

I'm going to doubt he'll be directing it, but J.J. Abrams and Bad Robot have picked up the rights to Boilerplate: History's Mechanical Marvel. The idea for the book apparently dates back over a decade, when Paul Guinan set up a website to fish for interest in his idea about the adventures of the world's first robot, Boilerplate. Over the years, people came to believe that the stories were true and eventually, Guinan and collaborator Anita Bennett got a publishing deal for the book, which The Hollywood Reporter describes as a hybrid between a picture book and a graphic novel. So that's already a bit intriguing. It gets better, though:

"Boilerplate purports to tell the story of the world’s first robot, who, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, fought alongside Teddy Roosevelt and Lawrence of Arabia, journeyed to the South Pole and was involved in the silent movie business before disappearing on the battlefields of World War I."

The website has a few photos of Boilerplate's journey, including the one above, where he's in the ring with the legendary Jack Johnson. The adaptation joins a long line of Bad Robot projects, so who's to say when it will get off the ground or what form it will take. Sounds like a great fit for Abrams' sci-fi sensibilities, though. This is too cool! Back in March I published an interview with Mr. Guinan and found him always a pleasant fellow. I truly could not be happier that the very talented J. J.
