Gore Verbinski Still Hammering Out 'Bioshock' Budget

Even though Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time probably represents the biggest allocation of resources to a video game movie, its relative failure isn't making Gore Verbinski blink. Verbinski, the Pirates director who's producing Bioshock for Universal, says the project is different from most games. "I think BioShock's a rare one because it's actually a great story," Verbinksi told IGN. "Me? I don't want to make movies based on videogames, but BioShock's the one Oedipal, crazy kind of -- it's just got really good bones, and we're really trying to figure out a way to make it work." There's good news for fans of the game, although form Universal's perspective, it could be something of a road block. Verbinski wants to keep the movie a pure as he can but, "The problem with BioShock was: R-rated movie, underwater, horror. It's a really expensive R-rated movie." "We're trying to figure out a way working with [director] Juan Carlos [Fresnadillo] to get the budget down and still keep so it's true to the core audience, you know? The thing is it has to be R, a hard R," Verbinski added. As we've pointed out a bajillion times, Universal needs stuff that makes money, and "expensive" and "hard R" is not really a formula that adds up. And clearly, the studio think the same thing. "Right now it's really a budget thing and how to keep the integrity and keep it a Hollywood movie because it could balloon. It's a lot. Our first budget was extraordinarily high and we're working on it," Verbinski confirmed. If you're going to do the movie the right way, it kind of has to be a huge budget, though, doesn't it? If you go in around $85 million...you're just wasting $85 million. But then, look at the $200 million spent on Prince of Persia.
