Tuesday, July 6, 2010 at 5:22AM First Look: Viggo, Fassbender in 'A Dangerous Method'
They're not much to work with, but here are the first photos of Michael Fassbender and Viggo Mortensen in character in the 19th century as Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud in A Dangerous Method. Trailblazing psychologists in a love triangle FTW!

There are plenty of reasons to look forward to this one, not the least of which are the two rival thinkers being portrayed by consistently interesting actors like Viggo and Fassbender. There's also the little item that this adaptation of Christopher Hampton's play The Talking Cure is directed by David Cronenberg, and the girl in the middle of the tug-of-war between Freud and Jung is Keira Knightley, so that's perfectly understandable.
The pictures came to us through The Playlist, which notes that Mortensen was a last-minute replacement for Christoph Waltz, and as much as I dig Vig, I can't help but think what the recent Oscar winner could have done here as Freud. But Waltz chose Water for Elephants instead of this, and that might have more commercial appeal, but it's still pretty limited, I think.
Production on A Dangerous Method continues through the summer, and because Cronenberg is busier than ever, he'll move right into filming one of a couple other movies he's already got lined up. So post-production may wait a bit, which is fine because Cronenberg is a usual guest of the Toronto Film Festival. That would set this film up pretty well for a fall 2011 unveiling. And I have no explanation for why Fassbender is mid-Chiclet in that picture..
