Tuesday, August 17, 2010 at 4:02PM Trailer - 'Monsters' Has a Touch of 'District 9'
If immitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then today, Neill Blomkamp must feel very special. The
new sci-fi thrilla Monsters doesn't look all that original, but it sure does remind us how good District 9
is.

To be fair to the makers of Monsters, it's hard to be fair to the makers of Monsters, or at least the people
who threw the trailer together. It's as if they don't want us to think of anything but D9, because the story is
probably noticeably different, but the key images and mood here are straight out of Johannesburg.
So watch this and let us know what you think. If it's not like District 9 then the trailer - which is otherwise pretty good - would be selling the wrong thing. But it does look like it might have some good effects, which shouldn't be a surprise if you do some digging; director Gareth Edwards has been doing VFX for a number of years.

It may also show the continuing influence of "Children of Men" as well. It looks kinda' like THAT movie AND D9 and even Spielberg's "War of the Worlds". Also too, a bit of the French sci-fi movie "Eden Log". I think it's interesting too the critic blurb that calls it a "giant monster movie", so we may have some of "The Host" and "Cloverfield" in there as well. All these along with "Battle Los Angeles" and "Caesar" - the "Conquest of the Planet of the Apes" remake - it looks like a new style of gritty dystopian sci-fi has emerged now that we've made it through the first decade of the 21st century.
